The development of Green Shipping technologies begins with the inventory and knowledge of the current and immediate situation of air pollution from shipping. Every fossil fuel propulsion technology emits considerable amounts of sulphur and nitrogen oxides as well as particles and aerosols. They have significant health hazard potential and contribute to the permanent degradation of urban infrastructure. Until now, there has been virtually no measure of actual total pollution from ship emissions in the relevant regions.
In an interactive web application, we made an inventory of current ship emissions that goes far beyond the performance of today’s air quality indices.
High temperatures and humidity pose a significant risk to patients in UK NHS acute hospitals. Investment in air conditioning and new buildings needs to be planned across the UK with future climate conditions in mind.
A comprehensive study was performed to investigate the likelihood of hot spells lasting longer than a few days in the summer. This required an assessment of the quality of climate model results, a bias correction and a downscaling of the data to local information. The result is a probabilistic yet quantitative forecast of heat risk that will be used in optimising the planning of future building requirements for NHS acute hospitals.
The study shows that the South East of the UK is most vulnerable to heatwave hazards. This is where design improvements to NHS acute hospitals will be required.
